Member of the Tribe – a Bigger Tribe
Tonight is the first night of Chanukah, and so I want to talk about my Methodist mother-in-law.
As devout a Christian as Betty was, it was absolutely fine with her that we raised our girls in my Jewish faith – all Betty cared about was God and love. She described the occasion of my daughter Joanna’s Bat Mitzvah as one of the happiest days of her life. The photograph above is of a menorah she cross-stitched for us.
Betty lived a life that was such an incredible response to toxic tribalism. For me, her legacy is to make me want to expand my own definition of “tribe” and to make that an important part of my life’s work. I miss her every day.
And speaking of December miracles, how ‘bout them Eagles?!?
