Winter Relief in a Mug

I hate this cold weather. The only thing good about winter is hot chocolate, which I love. Actually, I love cold chocolate, too, but I’m currently not on speaking terms with either of them. They pretend to be my friends, but then they take over my life with their ceaseless demands for consumption. 

So now I’ve turned to golden milk – a hot, soothing, aromatic, delicious, winter drink flavored with turmeric. Turmeric is quite an amazing spice. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties (1). It also has protective effects against cancer, including breast cancer (2).

By the way, as with other supplements, commercially-prepared turmeric is not regulated. You don’t know how much turmeric is in any given product or what other substances it may be mixed with (3). Stick with the real stuff.

The recipe is based on one from the Minimalist Baker, a terrific website that specializes in delicious, uncomplicated recipes. 

Golden Milk

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or half almond milk and half light coconut milk.

  • 1/2-3/4 tsp ground turmeric or a one-inch piece of turmeric, unpeeled and thinly sliced

  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger, or ½-inch piece of gingerroot, unpeeled and thinly sliced

  • 1 whole cinnamon stick or 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 

  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil

  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper or 1 tsp whole black peppercorns

  • 1-3 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)

Preparation

  • Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan.

  • Whisk to combine and heat over medium heat until hot but not boiling – about 4 minutes – whisking frequently. 

  • Strain into mugs or bowls. 

  • Curl up on your couch and enjoy

Notes:

  • If you find the golden milk to be too rich or thick for you, add a little hot water and stir.

  • If there’s any left over, you can store it covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat on the stovetop or microwave.
