Victory in the Garden & in Life
My sweet husband David died nine years ago today. As my daughter Joanna and I were harvesting lettuce and arugula from the seeds that she herself had planted in our Victory Garden, I thought about how David seemed somehow involved. His dedication to healthy eating was impressive (or perhaps insane, if you happened to be the one doing the shopping and chopping); and his concern for Joanna’s adolescent avoidance of fruits and vegetables was such that I believe that he was only partially kidding when he said he feared she was destined to develop scurvy. If only he could see her now, growing, prepping, and eating the greens for this incredible salad, he would, indeed, be delighted by that victory!
